BRONZE MEDALIST
Rose organized the first 5K Walk/Run in 1998 to raise the needed college bound funds for students participating in Rosie's Garage, an after school neighborhood tutoring program. Rose believes the youths need not only a fit mind, but fit body as well. In order to make that happen, Rosie's Garage began providing free 5K registration entries to low income neighborhood kids who would otherwise not be able participate.
The children Rosie's Garage serve, since 1991, live in low income neighborhoods. The majority of children living in La Habra's low income neighborhoods are Latinos, most first generation immigrants and at risk of gang intimidation.
St. Jude Hospital completed a study of North Orange County and found that La Habra has an obesity rate of 72%. While Rose knew that she had a concern for the lack of exercise the children were getting, she now had more of a conviction to encourage more participation of Rosie's Garage kids in her 5K event. This was the second year that Rose has offered low income kids free 5K entries.
Kids look forward to the annual event where 5K participants and sponsors are celebrating the children's accomplishment. The race route goes through their low income neighborhood which brings additional pride both to the children and their neighbors. Professional runners warmed up all the participants on Saturday, June 7, 2008.
This year Rosie's Garage had 318 participants, their highest number yet. Participation is expected to grow because Rosie's Garage children know they matter in La Habra.
