BRONZE MEDALIST
Ruth Mohr Silofau hated Physical Education! She was the "fat girl with the pretty face" who was always picked last for any physical activity. Then she met "that teacher", who's safe, loving and caring environment allowed her to step out of her comfort zone and take a risk to become physically active.
That risk paid off for the Physical Education Students of California. Ruth was just recognized by CAHPERD as California's Physical Education Teacher of the Year. After achieving National Board Certification in 2002, Ruth understood the need for change in Physical Education. She recognized that the student's needs were not being met. So, Ruth co-wrote and implemented course outlines for a new Physical Education Course. This curriculum Ruth taught is now being offered at all 5 high schools in the district. One of the courses, Personal Fitness, has almost every Wilson High School student in Physical Education, enrolled for the up-coming year.
When Ruth started teaching at Wilson Classical High School 21 years ago, there was only one Elective Aerobics Class. Now there are 5 along with Weight Training; Fitness and Conditioning; and for the first time next year - Yoga. Her goal is "If we are teaching Physical Education the right way, it will automatically evolve into a 4-year Program". Evidence of this is based on the number of students now enrolled in 4 years of Physical Education.
Other projects that Ruth incorporated in 2007: Co-wrote the PEP grant received, adding a Spin and a Rowing Room, and currently working toward implementing a Fitness Center.
Ruth's inspirational story and work has impacted 1000's of students. Just this past year, Ruth was named Long Beach TOY; LAC TOY; Southern California PE TOY, and CA PE TOY for 2007-2008.
